Students will create a semi-structured lesson plan to teach a mini-lesson (25-30 minutes) to a small-group of students with disabilities using the explicit instructional routine we have learned in this course.

Directions:

1)Choose a topic/focus of your mini-lesson to address the following:

Specific skill/strategy (i.e., Sounds for consonant blends; identifying words with blends, identifying the main idea of a text, composing a paragraph with topic sentence, etc).

2)Create a Mini-Lesson Using the Format Provided (i.e., Explicit Lesson Template)

  • Lesson must include 2 instructional activities addressing the skill/strategy

    • Each activity will have I Do/You Do/We Do process (In Body of Lesson)
    • Do NOT include separate Lesson Opening and Closing for each activity: mini-lesson is to have 1 opening and 1 closing routine.
  • Lesson will include brief scripting of what you would say during lesson, activities that students will be engaged in, description of materials, procedures for eliciting student responses, providing feedback, and opportunities for practice. (Include what you will SAY and what you will DO during lesson)
  • Remember that this lesson plan should be for a lesson of ~25-30 minutes so plan your instructional activities accordingly.
  • Chapters 2 provides excellent examples of model lessons for Skills/Strategy explicit instructional routine.
  • Your lesson activities, texts, examples, language should be representative of working with a culturally/linguistically diverse group of students.
