PAPER TOPICS ON MARX

Please write a coherent, unified paper of at least 7-8 pages on one of the following questions. You must document your paper with evidence from the texts. You may not cite lecture material as such evidence in this essay, though you may use such material in the final exam.
Papers must have numbered pages, be double-spaced, and have margins of one inch.

1. Marx developed an interpretation of history he called “practical materialism,” as opposed to Hegelian “idealism” and to the “contemplative materialism” of some of Hegel’s critics. What are the central features of Marx’s practical materialism, and what concepts and relations does he use in analyzing societies and history, as well as consciousness and politics? What are the features of “idealism” that he criticizes?

2. Throughout his life, Marx sought to understand and to formulate the causes of major social change, with the goal of shaping action in the “direction” of history. What are these larger causes, in Marx’s view? Do the same causes lie behind all major advances? Is there a pattern to historical and revolutionary change and to the relation and role of social classes? In what way does Marx think a revolution led by the working class would be different from previous revolutions? How would such a revolution affect the possibility of human emancipation?

3. Marx argues that the analysis of society must proceed from an account of its “mode of production” and of the “relations of production.” In the case of capitalism, this means the relations between capital and wage-labor, or the bourgeoisie and proletariat, which are the major social classes in bourgeois society. What is a “mode of production,” according to Marx, and what distinguishes the capitalist mode from previous modes more precisely? What are the reasons behind the “antagonistic character of capitalist accumulation,” and how is this antagonism expressed in “class struggles”?
