RELS 245B Muhammad and the Qur’an

Final Exam: An Overview

As
a creative and comprehensive way of demonstrating what you have learned
over the course of this semester, you will write a dialogue for your
final exam in which you create a fictional conversation between yourself
and someone else (i.e. a friend, family member, prominent contemporary
or historical figure, fictional character, etc….feel free to get
creative!) about misconceptions of Islam as an inherently violent and
misogynistic religion. You will use the knowledge and resources related
to Muhammad and the Qur’an you have gained in this course as materials
from which to draw as you respond to your conversation partner.

In
this conversation, you are the expert and your objective is to educate
your interlocutor. However, keep in mind that educating is not the same
thing as defending; that is, your task is not to defend Islam per se,
but rather to engender greater understanding of it by illuminating for
your conversation partner both the origins of these misconceptions as
well as how accurate knowledge of Muhammad and the Qur’an dispels them.
As such, your dialogue should address the following questions:

1)
What is the nature of the misconceptions of Muhammad and the Qur’an as
inherently violent and misogynistic and what are their historical
origins?

2) Why is it inaccurate to characterize Muhammad and the Qur’an as inherently violent?

3) Why is it inaccurate to characterize Muhammad and the Qur’an as inherently misogynistic?

Your
dialogue will be graded according to your demonstration of accurate
knowledge of Muhammad and the Qur’an using the relevant sources from the
course syllabus, creativity of conversation, organization of the ideas
presented, and writing style (including grammar, punctuation, and
mechanics). The dialogue should be 8-12 pages, have a heading/title
page, and be written double-spaced using 12-point Times New Roman font.
Feel free to use which ever citation style you’re most comfortable with
(MLA, APA, Chicago/Turabian), but make sure to be correct and consistent
in your use of it!
