PS 301 Park University Violence in The Media Social Psychology Discussion – Assignment Help

I don’t know how to handle this Psychology question and need guidance.

Violence in the Media

The purpose of this discussion is to examine the aggression and violence that are standard fare in the media today, consider how it influences our view of society in general, and think about what level of aggression we see as normal and acceptable. We regularly watch violent television shows and movies and many allow their children to watch this type of content. Even when parents restrict their smaller children to strictly kids shows and cartoons they have a surprising amount of aggressive acts and language. Video games are full of aggression and violence. The news regularly focuses on violence. Social media passes on aggressive acts with it seeming to be a growing occurrence of bystanders passively standing by to record one person perpetrate aggressive acts on another.

One typical response is for people to decry the criticism of video violence as making it more problematic than it is, especially with video games, saying the media doesn’t make a person a killer. There are certainly more powerful influences in a person’s life than the media such as parenting, exposure to domestic violence and child abuse, influence of violence in the neighborhood and school, etc. But I think the argument violence in the media doesn’t make a person a killer misses the point. We are all greatly influenced by our environment. There is evidence that indicates we as a society have more fear, anxiety, and depression than in the past. More people feel unsafe. The number of mental health problems has increased. People see the world as an unsafe and unfriendly place. Television, movies, blogs, websites, and social media all seem to be filled with people responding to each other in aggressive and violent ways with put downs, bullying, betrayal, and other forms of aggression.

For this assignment I want you to identify two examples you take from movies, television shows, social media, news, advertisements, or any form of media that depicts or communicates aggression or violence. For each one I want you to:

  1. Describe the type of aggression or violence
  2. Describe what the underlying message is about human nature
  3. How you think this kind of example impacts a person’s attitudes and feelings toward others and society
  4. How you think filling media with these kinds of examples contributes to an overall reaction and attitude that increases distrust, insecurity, wariness of others

The point of this discussion is to not conclude media is responsible for all of the ills in the world, in society, or in our lives but to honestly examine the steady “drip, drip, drip” contribution of an influence we accept without considering ways to better manage it. We never intentionally drink bad water and many people are careful about the kinds of food they put into their body, but when it comes to the media we expose our minds and our children’s minds to things on a regular basis without much thought or consideration.
