The exam is in two parts Part 1 are these questions Part 2 is in the assignment listed. Make sure to answer both Part 1 and Part 2 to receive full credit.

Students will answer one question from the questions below. The question will be worth a maximum of 50 points. The exam is due at the end of class on 10/22 exams will NOT be accepted after 2:10pm on 10/22. Answer each question as thoroughly as possible focusing on all the aspects of the question. See the grading rubric for more information on how the exam will be graded. Answers to each question should be roughly 5 pages in length but should NOT exceed 7 pages. Working with others is forbidden if you have any questions ask me do not ask other students or anyone outside of the class.

Answers must indicate the question being answered, be type written, double spaced, with 1 inch margins, and Times New Roman 12 cpi font. The answer should be written in paragraph form and be roughly 1500 words. The text should be used to support your answers, when citing the text please use in-text citation referring to the page number. Do not use excessive quotation, more than 3 lines per page is considered excessive. Students should focus on the materials from the course, but if outside sources are being used a work cited page will be required. Only PDF or DOC files can be read so please only use those types of files.

Question 1: Machiavelli is a transitional theorist, a connection between the ancient and modern worlds. Describe Machiavelli’s theory as described in the Prince. What is Machiavelli’s view of human nature, how does this view of human nature affect Machiavelli’s theory? Machiavelli’s pragmatic approach to power has earned him the reputation of being evil, illustrate how Machiavelli sees power giving at least three examples of Machiavelli’s theory. In addition to Machiavelli’s view of power discuss the characteristics that a Prince should and should not have in order to seize and maintain power. Overall, what is your opinion of Machiavelli’s theory? Is he evil or just a pragmatist? Justify your answer.
