To get started, you need to select a job you are interested in analyzing. Choose a job that you can observe for a short period of time. For this assignment, you should select a job which has a good bit of activity and repetition. Pick a job that is appropriate to evaluate using the “observation method” described in the PowerPoint presentation. (Professional positions and secretarial jobs should not be chosen for this assignment.)
Now you are ready to do a (three) 3-part analyses:
1. Research the labor market regarding the job you selected to analyze. You want to find out if the occupation has a positive forecast on the national, state, and local level; what special education/training is required; if previous work experience is generally a prerequisite; and, what typical salary and benefits are provided. 2. Use the job analysis form provided to analyze that particular job through observation and interview. You should observe the job incumbent for a couple of hours or however long is needed to give you a good snapshot of the job in its entirety. Use the attached job analysis form. 3. Analyze the work culture of the company/agency where you did the job analysis. Your goal is to find out as much as you can about the informal work environment and the unofficial work policies and procedures. If allowed, look around the organization a bit making note of people interactions. Then, interview the job incumbent and one other employee of the business or industry. Suggestions for interview questions are included in the PowerPoint presentation. Part 3 should be approximately 1-2 pages, double-spaced.
